Ready for train ride across Europe?
This poster was probably made to encourage younger people to go on Interrail across Europe. Cool and different poster featuring multiple national state railways logos from different countries.
The poster is a part of a series of six which was made by the Danish artist Knud Odde (1955) to celebrate the 150th anniversary of Danish State Railways (DSB). This poster is number three of six in the collection.
Odde is self-taught artist who used to write music and play the bass guitar in the Danish punk/rock group Sort Sol. He left the band in 2001 to focus on painting and drawing.
His portrait drawings of people and makes the person looks very characteristic and draws attention to the little details that makes the person look unique and thus adding life to the portraits. In fact, many of Odde works have a very naturalistic character, almost cartoon-like expression. In his painting are often portraits of famous people, like Shirley MacLaine, Rainer Maria Rilke, Patti Smith and Miles Davis where the images with stark colors with knots and edges pointing in the direction of suppressed emotions and conflicts. With these images we also detect an inspiration from 1960s pop art of Andy Warhol, among others, however, were much more smoothly in the expression.
Odde's works also includes posters for Tivoli Gardens, Paralympic Games in Athens and Copenhagen Jazz Festival. Some of his works in found in The National Gallery of Denmark.
