The Bauhaus Archive is a state archive and design museum. It collects works of art, objects, documents and literature relating to the Bauhaus school and puts them on public display. The white, black and grey shapes on the poster reflects the architecture of the building seen from the south-west.
The Bauhaus Archive stands as a testament to one of the most influential art and design movements of the 20th century. Established in 1960, the museum and research center are dedicated to preserving and showcasing the legacy of the Bauhaus school.
The Bauhaus, founded in 1919 by architect Walter Gropius, was a revolutionary institution that sought to break down the traditional barriers between art and craftsmanship. It brought together artists, architects, and designers in a collaborative environment, fostering a holistic approach to creative expression. The school's emphasis on merging form and function, along with its avant-garde vision, significantly shaped modern design.
The Bauhaus Archive houses an extensive collection of documents, artworks, and artifacts that chronicle the history of the Bauhaus movement. Visitors can explore an array of exhibits that highlight the innovative works of iconic figures associated with the school, such as Wassily Kandinsky, Paul Klee, and Marcel Breuer. The archive also provides insights into the pedagogical methods and experimental techniques employed at the Bauhaus.
Designed by Bauhaus architect Walter Gropius, the building itself is a masterpiece of modernist architecture. Its clean lines, functional layout, and use of glass reflect the principles championed by the school. The archive serves as both a museum and a research facility, attracting scholars, students, and design enthusiasts from around the world.
In addition to its permanent collection, the Bauhaus Archive hosts temporary exhibitions, lectures, and workshops, ensuring a dynamic and evolving experience for visitors. As a cultural institution, it continues to play a vital role in fostering appreciation for the Bauhaus movement and its enduring impact on the world of art and design.
