Every year Tivoli Gardens (or simply Tivoli) lets a Danish artist design the poster art for the coming season.
The art for the poster of 1988 was created by Freddie Wilhelm (1909-1995) and displays a young girl walking or biking home from a great night in Tivoli carrying balloons in many colors. In the background is the iconic main entrance of Tivoli.
Tivoli Gardens is one of the world most famous amusement parks. The park is the second oldest amusement park in the world and is based in Copenhagen, Denmark and is by far the most visited spot in Scandinavia.
Wilhelm Freddie was a Danish painter, graphic designer and object artist, Like the father of the psychoanalysis (Freud) Wilhelm Freddie was occupied by the soul before reason as well as the lust and the flesh of the human.
Freddie was the only Danish artist who experienced being reported to the police for having produced "obscene works of art". He was given a staple punishment for its "pornographic excesses" in 1937. At a retrial in 1963 he was acquitted and the works were delivered back under great public sensation.
Wilhelm Freddie was know to be a surreal loner as he stood out from other Surrealist artists in Denmark. Despite these facts he achieved great public recognition, prizes, honors and medals.
Note: this is the smaller version of the normal sized poster which is 24.4 x 33.5 in/62 x 85 cm. This small version was retrieved directly from Tivoli and it is very possible that this poster was not meant for sale to the public.
