A brilliant exhibition poster displaying the Roman goddess of Ceres.
The poster advertises a Wiinblad exhibition in Düsseldorf (Germany) with theatre works from 1947-1986. Wiinblad designed several costumes, dresses, stage curtains etc. in his long career.
Ceres is a Roman goddess equivalent to the Greek goddess Demeter - sister of Juno (which is also to be found in this poster collection). In the classical art she is usually depicted with a scepter, a basket of flowers and fruits and a garland - and as you see Wiinblad also added flowers and (what appears to be) grapes and oranges in her hair.
Ceres was the goddess of plant growth and motherly love. It is said she was taken into Roman mythology in 496 BC, during a grueling famine since the Sibylline books advised them to adopt the Greek goddesses Demeter, Kore and probably Dionysus.
This poster is accurately a mask sketch for a theater performance. Wiinblad designed many decorations and costumes for both revues, plays, ballets and this poster is the sketch for goddess Ceres' mask in the Shakespeare performance "The Tempest". The play was set up in Dallas Theater Center in Texas from 1965–1966.
The craft of Wiinblad is often colorful, lush and full of humor. He was inspired by the sumptuous oriental style far from the Nordic stylish line. This artwork is differently true to his special line.
The views on his works are to this day very divided, but interest in his finer things are unrelenting - especially abroad (particularly the U.S., Japan, Germany and Norway). Bjørn Wiinblad's contemporaries were not exactly inclined to acknowledge his way to work, so his position as an artist has been a bit special.
Globally, Bjørn Wiinblad is one of the very best selling Danish artists. He is represented at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London and the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
