It is rarely that a poster becomes so famous that it is given a name. This art deco beauty has a name and it is "Lyntogsplakaten" (Danish) or "High Speed Train".
This poster is a 1985 reproduction of the original poster from 1937. The 1985 issue was printed in a smaller number than the 1937 issue - a good poster colleague told me.
This is the poster signaling optimism, speed and technology in the late 1930s. The poster in the worm's eye view shows the tracks with the forward running express train, while the old steam train disappearing off the track. The poster is created by Aage Rasmussen as an international advertising for Danish State Rails (DSB) in 1937. Existing posters comes with either French, German and English subtitles (under "DSB").
After the completion of linking the island kingdom of Denmark with two important bridges (Storstrøm Bridge and Lillebælt Bridge) the director general Peter Knutzen of DSB got his idea of "express trains". He gets his new idea while spending his holiday in Northern Germany where he discovers the "The Flying Hamburger" - a high speed train between Hamburg and Berlin.
The opening of the new bridges makes Knutzen's vision sustainable. Without the cumbersome ferry it is possible to rush through half of Denmark with the breathtaking speed of 120 kilometers per hour. According to DSB the 1930s high speed trains is as fast on many stretches as their modern trains today (you do the math). The red high-speed trains had an enormous impact on DSB's image in the 1930s and the following decades - though relatively few people actually travel with them.
The poster is designed by poster artist Aage Rasmussen who got his breakthrough as a young man with the design of his first poster in when he proposed this poster for DSB. The poster was accepted by DSB on the spot and kick started Rasmussens career. Rasmussen made since several posters for DSB. Several of them were used as advertising posters abroad.
The minimalist Art Deco look makes a strong impression of this advertising poster and adds a very powerful look, which is even more enhanced by the track lines. I the combination of dark blue and brown color with red high speed train speeding through the night really creates the atmosphere of being a part of the progress and hope for the future.
