Here is a great piece of football art history created for the World Cup in Spain in 1982.
This poster represents the city of Málaga in southern Spain and displays a player heading a football. The round shape of the football also make up the rounding in the World Cup trophy. In this way, the poster can be viewed from different perspectives. One interesting thing about the trophy on the poster looks like the "Jules Rimet Trophy" which was not in use by 1982. A new trophy was made for the 1974 World Cup and is still in use today. And in 1983 the "Jules Rimet Trophy" was stolen from its owners (Brazil) and has never been recovered.
In total 15 different posters was commissioned for the Football/Soccer tournament "World Cup 1982 Spain" or "Copa del Mundo de Futbol España 1982". Each poster was designed by a different artist and each poster represents the individual host cities/venues where the World Cup matches would be played.
It is a bit unusual for a World Cup to have different posters for the different venues (normally only one is commissioned) and it is also unusual to have this many venues. But in this way the posters would also advertise the different cities and the local football clubs of the cities (the matches would have been played in stadiums which normally served as home grounds for the local club).
The poster is official WC merchandise which is visible in the bottom of the poster.
Please note: the poster was printed in 1981 - the year before the 1982 World Cup poster was used.
