This great and atmospheric poster displays Titania - the queen of the fairies.
The Danish artist Bjørn Wiinblad made this poster for a theater production of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” in Karlsruhe, Germany in 1982 and Wiinblad designed not only the stage décor but also the costumes.
“A Midsummer Night’s Dream” is a comedy play by Shakespeare starting with "Titania" and her husband "Oberon" (the king of the fairies) having a dispute. They are fighting over a changeling child whom Oberon wants to raise as his henchman. Titania wants to keep the child because he is the child of Titania's mortal follower who died, and she wants to raise the child for her follower. Because Oberon and Titania are powerful fairies, their arguments affect the weather.
The rest of the story is up for you to read or watch..
The craft of Wiinblad is often colorful, lush and full of humor. He was inspired by the sumptuous oriental style far from the Nordic stylish line.
The views on his works are to this day very divided, but interest in his finer things are unrelenting - especially abroad (particularly the U.S., Japan, Germany and Norway). Bjørn Wiinblad's contemporaries were not exactly inclined to acknowledge his way to work, so his position as an artist has been a bit special.
Globally, Bjørn Wiinblad is one of the very best selling Danish artists. He is represented at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London and the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
