1978 Anti-Nuclear Poster – Denmark as a Target? - Original Vintage Poster

This original political poster was created by SFU (Socialistisk Folkepartis Ungdom), the youth wing of Denmark’s Socialist People’s Party, during the height of the Nordic anti-nuclear movement in the late 1970s. At the time, Europe was deep in the Cold War, and Denmark faced intense public debate about NATO, Soviet influence, and the risk of nuclear weapons being stationed or targeted in the Nordic region.

The bold graphic style reflects the urgency of the era: a missile striking toward Denmark, surrounded by the symbols of the United States and the Soviet Union. The striking red, black, and blue design was meant to provoke a visceral response raising awareness among young voters and mobilizing mass participation in protests and political action.

The poster features SFU’s rounded logo, a design only used for a short period from the late 1970s to the early 1980s. This makes the piece historically distinct and easy to date. During these years, SFU became a major cultural force in Denmark’s anti-nuclear and peace movements, organizing marches, youth conferences, and nationwide campaigns calling for “Et Atomfrit Norden” - a nuclear-free Nordic region.

Printed by Eks-Skolens Trykkeri ApS, a well-known press for left-wing and activist groups of the period, the poster carries all the hallmarks of genuine grassroots political art: simple, powerful imagery, fast production, and a design made to be posted on walls, meeting halls, and university corridors across the country.
