One of Wiinblad's many masterpieces! A gigantic poster made up of two posters!

I found the poster in a Wiinblad book where it is called a sample for a tapestry known as "Fifth theme, The Dallas Apparel Mart".

For the exhibition, Wiinblad made five different tapestries from "The Arabian Nights" or "Thousand and One Nights adventures" which was on display in The Apparel Mart, Texas in 1972.

I believe the woman on the poster is "Scheherazade" - she is the woman who keeps telling the caliph interesting stories so that he will refrain from killing her... Originally, the caliph (Shahryar) married to a woman whom he loved very much, but she was unfaithful to him. So he decided to marry a virgin every day and cut off her head when the day was over.

One day he married Scheherazade. She was not like the others - she was much more clever and had a story for every day. When the day was over she said that she would continue the story the following day. When the Caliph had to hear the story to end he did not have the heart to kill her. After 1001 night with stories and without Shahryar killing his wife, then Scheherazade quit her stories. At that time the caliph is so in love with her that he refrains from killing a new wife every morning. And they lived happily ever after...

The craft of Wiinblad is often colorful, lush and full of humor. He was inspired by the sumptuous oriental style far from the Nordic stylish line. This artwork is differently true to his special line - Scheherazade was one of his favorite figures from 1001 Nights so it is no wonder he made this gigantic poster with her portrait.

The views on his works are to this day very divided, but interest in his finer things are unrelenting - especially abroad (particularly the U.S., Japan, Germany and Norway). Bjørn Wiinblad's contemporaries were not exactly inclined to acknowledge his way to work, so his position as an artist has been a bit special.

Globally, Bjørn Wiinblad is one of the very best selling Danish artists. He is represented at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London and the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

The poster was also used as the book cover and advertisement poster for a (almost) recent Wiinblad exhibition at ARKEN Museum of Modern Art, Copenhagen, Denmark.

Please note: this listing contains two posters that when put together creates a complete image. The poster is quite rare in this size.
