A truly divine piece of artwork by the world famous Bjørn Wiinblad (1918-2006).
After a long research I was not able to find information on the Fratelli Spassosi but a translation would be something like "The Hilarious Brothers". That makes me think that this could be an advertising poster for an Italian performing show - perhaps a kind of a circus show?
As far as I know there are nine posters in series with "Fratelli Spasosi" where the "brothers" are juggling with different things. There are other posters in different colors too. Since the posters comes in different versions I believe the Fratelli Spasosi show must has been large show - possibly touring around Europe.
The craft of Wiinblad is often colorful, lush and full of humor. He was inspired by the sumptuous oriental style far from the Nordic stylish line. This artwork is differently true to his special line. The motif is quite simple and yet very detail rich if you look closer.
The views on his works are to this day very divided, but interest in his finer things are unrelenting - especially abroad (particularly the U.S., Japan, Germany and Norway). Bjørn Wiinblad's contemporaries were not exactly inclined to acknowledge his way to work, so his position as an artist has been a bit special. Globally, Bjørn Wiinblad is one of the very best selling Danish artists. He is represented at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London and the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
