This rare and colorful beauty of a poster was originally intended to be a part of the SAS calendar of 1961 with the theme of "The great discoveries of the world" by the famous Danish artist Otto Nielsen.
Ivan Yuryevich Moskvitin (? - 1647) was a Russian explorer, presumably a native of Moscow, who led a Russian reconnaissance party to the Sea of Okhotsk, becoming the first Russian to reach the Pacific Ocean. Moskvitin is first attested in 1626 as residing among the Cossacks in Tomsk. In 1636 or 1637 Dmitry Kopylov with 54 men including Moskvitin were sent west toward Yakutsk. He went down the Lena River and up the Aldan River and on 1638 founded the fort of Butalsk about 100 km above the mouth of the Maya River and about 250 km southeast of Yakutsk. The information Moskvitin provided enabled Kurbat Ivanov, a famous Cossack explorer, to make the first map of the coast in 1642.
I got this item from a former pilot who worked in Scandinavian Airlines Systems in Karup, Denmark for 40 years and he told me that this item never has been up for sale before. There is only a few copies of these posters as they are surplus from the production of the SAS calendar from 1961. The surplus production posters was locked up in boxes in the basement in Karup airport where the pilot used to work. This poster was meant to be attached to a fold-out calendar. Other copies of these posters are thus attached together as in a regular calendar which means that there are 12 different pictures in the whole collection of the "calendar ".
Since they come as individual posters they are much more beautiful (no waste of paper for the calendar dates) and easier to frame and hang on the wall. The poster is in perfect condition and is in a great thick paper quality which measures 15.9 x 11.6 in (40.5 x 29.5 cm).
Thanks for watching and please let me know if you have any questions.
