This rare and colorful beauty of a poster was originally intended to be a part of the SAS calendar of 1961 with the theme of "The great discoveries of the world" by the famous Danish artist Otto Nielsen.
Ferdinand Magellan was a Portuguese navigator who sailed under the Spanish flag. In 1520 he was the first European to sail south of South America and was thus the first European to reach the Pacific. In 1505, Magellan made his first expedition. He was an officer during the conquest of Malacca, Malaysia. He became good friends with another officer, Francisco Serrão. Serrão reached the Moluccas through east and told him that he had been rushed rich in spices from these islands.
On November 29, 1519 Magellan reached the Brazilian coast, but they failed to go ashore in Brazil because the country was Portuguese domination, and therefore continued south, where they discovered the strait that connects the Pacific and Atlantic. They called this strait of Magellan Strait. Magellan never reached the Moluccas or circumnavigated the globe. in 1521 Ferdinand was killed by Datu Lapu at the Battle of Mactan on the island of Mactan (modern times Philippines), after he unsuccessfully attempted to forcibly baptized them.
Under the leadership of Juan Sebastián Elcano reached one of the two remaining (originally 5) ships back to Spain with only 18 survivors. Elcano and his crew were thus the first people to sail around the globe, but they are , despite this great achievement , largely bypassed by history.
Since they come as individual posters they are much more beautiful (no waste of paper for the calendar dates) and easier to frame and hang on the wall. The poster is in perfect condition and is in a great thick paper quality which measures 15.9 x 11.6 in (40.5 x 29.5 cm).
Thanks for watching and please let me know if you have any questions.
