Beautiful and rare printed sketch by Wiinblad depicting a lady surrounded by little birds.
I think the lady on the sketch is the figure Susanna as it seems to be written in the upper right side.
Actually, the story about Susanna comes from the Old Testament. In the book Susanna is taking a shower and two old men wants take advantage of the situation. The old men tells everyone that Susanna was in fact flirting part (which is not cool since Susanna is married to a guy named Joachim). However, divine intervention interferes and the old men are proven wrong and they are executed.
This is a bit of a strange thing to paint but Wiinblad made several posters, ceramics and artworks featuring the naked Susanna (or "Susanne" in Danish). In my opinion Wiinblad's interpretation stretches far here as there are way more than two old men and the men appears to be younger. Susanna does not seem to mind the situation but maybe she looks in the wrong direction.
The craft of Wiinblad is often colorful, lush and full of humor. He was inspired by the sumptuous oriental style far from the Nordic minimalist line. This artwork is differently true to his special line - please pay close attention to all the little details in the background. Wiinblad is one of my personal favorites as he liked to party, travel and make art. He always looked cheerful and has a spark in his eyes as well as he insists on making happy and colorful motifs.
Globally, Bjørn Wiinblad is one of the best selling Danish artists. He is represented at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, the Museum of Modern Art in New York and in many other museums all over the world.
