This nice old tourist poster from France shows a large photo of Château de Versailles. The castle is located some 20 kilometres southwest of the French capital.
Versailles is probably the most famous of all castles and also share name to a number of historical events - primarily the proclamation of the German Empire in 1871 after France lost the Franco-Prussian War and the Treaty of Versailles after the First World War.
During the rule of Louis the 14th appeared the castle garden appeared very large and "stately" - fully in line with the Baroque notion to the control of nature. The castle (and garden) became a symbol and manifestation of absolute monarchy centralized power. Most symbolic is the that the garden corridors all point to the absolutist king bedroom.
Everything was quite nice at the Versailles and the castle increased in importance when Louis XIV moved from Paris along with his court in 1682. About 100 year later during the French revolution (1789), the royal family was forced to return to the capital in after the beginning of the French Revolution and Versailles never became a center of power again.
The poster displays (what I believe to be) the backside of the castle seen from the huge castle garden. This is a great travel poster which was made for tourist offices around the world to inspire travelers and show of some the beauty within the France.
