Here is a great and atmospheric vintage poster encouraging people to visit the Danish town of Præstø.
Præstø is located south of Copenhagen and is mentioned for the first time in history in 1353. The church on the poster is from the same period and is simply known as Præstø Church. The houses in the foreground on the poster still exists today.
The Danish text on the poster says: Præstø - Gøngernes by.
Gøngerne was a Danish guerilla unit serving in the 17th century, serving in the armies of Christian IV, Frederick III, and Christian V. Gøngerne fought in the Torstenson War, Second Northern War, and the Scanian War, and led the snaphane militia in guerilla warfare against Sweden in occupied Zealand from 1658 to 1659.
The poster was made by the Danish illustrator and graphic designer Hakon Spliid (1893-1959). Spliid made a few different posters of Danish towns which is considered to be among his greatest works.
This is a great vintage travel poster from the heydays of the travel poster. The artwork of the poster is well performed with many shades and nuances - all in all a very beautiful poster with a unique motif indeed.
