Created in the early 1950s as part of a French government tourism campaign, this illustrated poster celebrates the historic town of Foix, located in the foothills of the Pyrenees in southern France. In the years following World War II, such posters were designed to encourage travel and rediscovery of regional France, combining art, storytelling, and national pride.
The scene unfolds along the river running through Foix. Red-roofed houses and stone buildings line the streets, while small figures, cars, and cyclists bring the town to life. Above it all rises the Château de Foix, the town’s medieval fortress, perched dramatically on a rocky hill and anchoring the composition both visually and historically.
Illustrated by Demonchy, the poster blends architectural detail with a warm, narrative style typical of mid-century French travel art. Rather than an idealized monument alone, we are shown daily life — movement, scale, and rhythm — inviting the viewer to imagine arriving, walking the streets, and looking up toward the castle.
Printed in Paris around 1952, this original vintage poster captures a moment when travel posters were not just advertisements, but works of art meant to transport the viewer to another place and time.
