A beautiful and nicely decorated advertisement for Danish chairs from FDB.
FDB (today Coop) is a Danish Consumers Cooperative Society and operates a long list of retail store chains - in some of which this chair was sold and still are today. This poster advertises forniture from FDB with a slogan: "Beautiful, appropriate and cheap".
The J52B chair on the poster was designed by the furniture architect Børge Mogensen in 1943-1944. It soon became a very popular chair among the broad population in Denmark. Not only was the chair priced reasonable and quite simple to construct but the chair was also elegant and comfortable. It is also one of the few chairs which can be used as a practical chair at the dining table but also as a relaxing chair in the living room.
Børge Mogensen was head of the FDB design studio in the period 1942-1950. This was the period just before the breakthrough of the re-known mid-century Danish design.
This great poster was designed by the legendary Danish poster artist Aage Sikker Hansen (1897-1955). Sikker Hansen created some of the most iconic posters in Danish poster history like the Cirkel Coffee Posters. His posters where often portraits or people often using only pencil and charcoal which makes his images quite detail rich with many textures and shades. This poster is definitely true to his legacy.
