This beauty of a poster is an official advertising poster for British Airways displaying the London Eye with Big Ben and Westminster at dusk time. A nice contrast is shown between the traditional architecture of London in the background and (at that time) the newly (or under construction) built London Eye in the front - representing the new millennium. Although the poster looks like a picture at fist sight it is actually a lithography.
London Eye, The British Airways London Eye, or The Millennium Wheel, is a large Ferris wheel in the middle of London. It is 135 meters high and was opened to the public in March 2000. There are 32 enclosed , air-conditioned cabins. The wheel rotates at a speed of 0,9 km/h, then a full rotation takes 28.26 min.
Since 2006, Tussauds owned 100 percent of The London Eye, while British Airways continues to associate its brand with the attraction. Tussauds, British Airways and Marks Barfield family (the primary architects) previously owned a third each of The London Eye, while the airline recorded the original construction loans.
Although the wheel is a popular success, there are major economic problems with the operation of the wheel and its debt is approx. 1.5 billion USD in mid- 2005, increasing by approx. 250 million per year. Part of the reason is interest and repayment of the loans were taken out to construct the wheel. Furthermore, taking Tussaud Group 4% of ticket revenues as management fee.
