A very nice exhibition poster by Joseph Cornell
The poster displays the portrait artwork "Mathematics and Music" which was used as bait to lure people to visit and exhibition on Leo Castelli in New York City.
Joseph Cornell (1903–1972) was an American artist and sculptor, best known for his pioneering work in assemblage art. Born in Nyack, New York, Cornell lived most of his life in the New York City area. He was a self-taught artist whose unique and highly original works have left a significant impact on the art world.
Cornell's artistic practice often involved creating "shadow boxes" or "assemblages," which were glass-fronted boxes containing arranged and carefully chosen objects. These boxes combined elements of surrealism, collage, and found-object art. Cornell's work frequently featured themes such as nostalgia, exploration, and the passage of time. He had a keen interest in collecting various objects, including old books, maps, postcards, and other ephemera, which he incorporated into his artworks.
