A stunning piece of art deco artwork by Aage Rasmussen. This poster is so beautiful that it belongs in every railway museum with respect for itself - now this quite rare mid-century poster is up for the take..
The poster displays a Danish bridge connection the island of Funen with mainland of Jutland. The Little Belt Bridge - now "the Old Little Belt Bridge" (another bridge was build in 1970) - was the first fixed link between Jutland and Funen.
The Funen main track between Middelfart and Nyborg opened in 1865 but it was not until seven years later when it became possible to take the ferry across the Little Belt to Jutland, so there was a train all the way from Copenhagen.
Since the rail ferry connection was opened, began studies of the possibilities of getting a solid connection and the first proposal was presented in the Danish government in 1899 without being adopted because the price was too high.
After the Danish reunification with southern Jutland to in 1920, the traffic of Funen and Southern Jutland grown significantly, and that was granted funds to conduct soil tests. The original idea was a double-track railway bridge because a combined road and rail would be too expensive. Alternatively, was a kind of monorail under the bridge, which could "ferry" vehicles on the other side.
The construction of a double track railway bridge as high bridge was decided but already during the construction the incremental in automobile traffic was so significant that it was necessary to establish tracks for the automobiles. In the summer of 1927 adopted a 6 meter wide lane with pavement. The additional costs were financed with the proceeds of the Law on Tax on Motor Vehicles.
Finally in 1939 the bridge was open and King Christian the 10th along with Prime Minister Thorvald Stauning. But the strong increase in vehicular traffic in the 1950s meant that the bridge was a decidedly bottleneck. At the same time came the broad highways that suited the modern traffic.
The large H-shaped motorway which was built in Denmark, were also cross the Strait, and in the 1960s the problem was serious. In 1961-1965 the car traffic doubled from 2.5 to 5 million. vehicles per year. The cows on the major holidays could extend 20-30 km on both sides, and an accident on the bridge paralyzed traffic in the area totally. A highway bridge in the east-west highway in "the H" was a necessity and in 1970 "The New Little Belt Bridge" was completed.
The poster is designed by the Danish artist Aage Rasmussen (1913-75) which is world famous for his iconic lithographic posters for DSB in the 1930s and 1950s. Rasmussen experienced in many ways its heyday early in his career, as the years 1937-38 also gave him international praise with a prize of honor at the World Exhibition in Paris. Rasmussen got his breakthrough in 1937 when he proposed a poster for DSB know as the high-speed train (Lyntogsplakaten) which is also available in my collection. You can find his signature along with the date of creation in the corner of the poster.
Overall this is great poster with nicely drawn shades, shadows and lighting effects which represents the late era of Art Deco. It is a great poster for everyone interested in Art Deco style, trains, engineering and history.
