Located in the city of Beauvais in northern France, Le Cathédrale Saint-Pierre de Beauvais, is a huge monument in the honer of the biblical figure of Saint Peter - the guy with the keys to Heaven. The huge cathedral is one of the most stunning achievement of Gothic architecture and has an interior that exceeds some 147 ft (46 m) in height.
The construction of the cathedral began in 1247 during Bishop William of Grès whom wanted to add an extra 16 ft (5 m) to the height, in order to make the Saint-Pierre the tallest cathedral in Europe. However, the work was interrupted in 1284 by the collapse of the vaulting of the choir, a disaster that produced a temporary failure of nerve among the masons working in Gothic style. Anyhow the Saint-Pierre was completed.
200 years later an attempt to erect a huge tower on the cathedral failed and most of the construction was torn down again. Like some people in their houses, it seems like this cathedral does not like having carpenters around.
