The poster displyas Carcassonne (Cité de Carcassonne) which is a fortified city in the southern French just north of the mountains of the Pyrenees.
The huge fortification features 53 strong towers dating from different time periods which reflects many different architectural styles. The earliest constructions dates back to the Roman era which is notably different from the medieval walls with the tell-tale red brick layers and the shallow pitch terracotta tile roofs.
Later when medieval fortifications became obsolete during Napoleon the fortified cité of Carcassonne fell into such disrepair that the French government decided that it should be demolished. Luckily the demolition was not accomplished and during the mid-1800 the restoration work began and since 1997 Carcassonne has been on the UNESCO list of world heritage sites.
This is a great travel poster which was made for tourist offices around the world to inspire travelers and show of some the beauty of Cité de Carcassonne.
