See Venice and before you die - or simply have this great poster help you out..
..that was a reference to that the city is so beautiful, there is nothing to top it and therefore no reason to go on living. The quote belongs to the the famous traveler Humboldt who traveled a lot during the 19th Century. And what he talked about at that time was in fact Naples!
The poster displays bronze replicas of the Greek Horses, statues that were stolen in 1204 during the sack of Constantinople during the Fourth Crusade and brought back to Venice. They remained in Venice until looted by Napoleon in 1797 but were returned in 1815.
The location of the shot of this poster is from St Mark's Basilica which also contains the original Greek Horses inside for conservation purposes. In the background is St Mark's Clocktower - a beautiful decorated building from the early renaissance.
