I am happy to have this magnificent Utrecht travel poster by Joseph Rovers available in my shop.
The poster displays the Gothic-style Dom Tower from the 14th century which was was one of the tallest towers in Europe for many years. In 1674 the central part of the Dom's cathedral collapsed during bad weather and today the tower is free standing - but with the rear of the cathedral still standing! In the front of the Dom is the river Vecht with its many historical buildings.
The text on the poster is French but a version in English also exists. A rough translation of the poster is: "Old university town + Picturesque canals + Gothic cathedral (1254) + Best centre for excursions by rail, bus and boat + International Dutch Fair".
This marvel of a poster was made by the infamous poster artist Joseph Rovers (1893-1976). Rovers favorite subjects were landscapes, nude figures, cityscapes , portraits and stilleben - many if which we can see on the poster. Also, Rovers was actually born in Utrecht so supposedly he knew what he was drawing and writing.
Thanks for watching and please let me know if you have any questions.
