A beautiful and inspiring advertisement poster for the Dance Theatre of Harlem encouraging people to see their show in the Tivoli Gardens in Copenhagen, Denmark.
Dance Theatre of Harlem was founded in 1969 and is Harlem-based ballet company and school based in Harlem, New York. The ballet was founded by Arthur Mitchell, who was the first African-American principal dancer at New York City Ballet. In 1981 the Dance Theatre became the first black company to appear at Covent Garden in London and toured widely in that period - and eventually they found their way to Denmark.
The poster was made by the Danish painter Nina Sten-Knudsen (1957) who had an artistic period in the 1980s where she depicted archetypal, dark characters, like an eagle, one red deer or a wolf on a colored background. Themes like memory, history and mythology was a recurring theme - elements which is quite visible on this poster.
