A majestic sports poster featuring an abstract football player made of flags.
The tournament of 1992 is one of the most memorable. It was the first time the unified Germany participated at the Euro venue. The former Soviet Union was represented as CIS (The Commonwealth of Independent States) before the former Soviet republics formed their own national teams.
In total, seven national teams contested the finals tournament with Sweden who participated as the host nation. Originally, the Yugoslav team was also qualified but because of the sudden outbreak of the civil war in Yugoslavia, the team were excluded by UEFA. Instead Denmark was selected to join in, as they ended as no. 2 after Yugoslavia in their qualifying pool. The Danish players was rushed home from their summer vacation and the players had only two weeks of preparation. To a grand amazement for the entire world of sports the Danish team (with Brian Laudrup and Schmeichel) made it to the final and beat the world champions of Germany in the final by 2-0.
This poster is truly a great symbol of one of the greatest achievements in the history of football/soccer. Being a Dane myself (at the age of 10), I clearly remember that summer night in late June back in 1992. I remember the Danish players were allowed to drink beers, eat fast food and relax throughout the entire tournament. They were not the perfect professionals but instead they had a good time as a strong collective and with a bit of luck they became the European Champions. When I watch the highlight of the tournament today I still get very emotional.
