Here is a great and atmospheric vintage poster encouraging people to visit the Danish town of Ribe.
The poster displays stork family having a nice time in their nest. Storks favor places like Ribe as there are many meadows surrounding the town and they are full of tasty frogs!
In the background you can spot Ribe Cathedral (Our Lady Maria Cathedral or in Danish "Ribe Domkirke). The main part of the Cathedral was constructed in the mid-1100 and is considered to be the best preserved Romanesque building in Denmark. Later the cathedral suffered collapses, fires, expansions, decay and restorations and today the cathedral leaves you a rich visual impression of many architectural styles. Today Ribe Cathedral ranks among the biggest tourist attractions in Denmark and has been awarded two stars in the Michelin guide.
Furthermore, Ribe was founded in 854 making it the oldest extant town in Denmark (and in Scandinavia). So many reasons for visiting Ribe!
The Danish text on the poster says: Come to Ribe - The oldest town in Denmark - The town of the stork.
The poster was made by the Danish illustrator and graphic designer Hakon Spliid (1893-1959). Spliid made a few different posters of Ribe which is considered to be among his greatest works.
This is a great vintage travel poster from the heydays of the travel poster. The artwork of the poster is well performed with many shades and nuances - all in all a very beautiful poster with a unique motif indeed.
Please note: the poster has a little blue piston in the lower right corner. The piston was made by "Trafiktjenesten" (The Traffic Service) suggesting the poster was used by them.
