A window to the Danish summer!
Here is a magnificent lithographic travel poster promoting the Denmark to a German speaking audience. The poster was commissioned by Danish State Railways and then distributed throughout Germany and perhaps other countries too.
Denmark has for many years been the place where many Germans go for a beach vacation. Even though Denmark is a small country it has 7000 KM of coastline which is all public (no one can own a beach in Denmark). Since Germany is neighboring Denmark and has a smaller coastline and a much larger population, Danish beaches has had many German footprints in its sand. This is why the poster display a sunny beach.
If the devil is in the detail then God must be in details of this poster. The motif appears to be quite simple but to catch the motion of the waves, the reflection of the sun and the quite heaven in art deco format is quite spectacle. What a rare beauty.
The poster was designed by Thor Bøgelund (1890-1959), a Danish cartoonist, educated at the Academy of Fine Arts 1909-14. Bøgelund's early posters were inspired by a simplicity and deep crisp colors. Later in his career Bøgelund was more influence of the international art deco. From 1914-58 he was associated with Tivoli Gardens and made several posters for the old Copenhagen amusement park.
A very stylish art deco travel poster that will bring much joy in any room it might be places in.
