I used most of the morning with my bright mother to figure out who is on this poster.
After much debate about the ancient gods Pan, Flora and Narcissus we landed on the Roman god Faunus - god of the forest, plains and fields. His Greek counter partner is Pan (horned god with goat legs), however Faunus is described with and without horns and goat legs. If you take a closer look at the "Faunus" on the poster you will discover that he is something that looks like horns Faunus. Maybe Wiinblad was in doubt too.
Faunus is also the god of fertility and sexual desire and with his connection to the forest I think Faunus a qualified. Take a closer look at the two couples having a good time in the background. The flower in his hand could be the symbol of fertility.
I could be wrong and I would be happy to hear other ideas :)
The poster is printed on heavy grade paper which seems to some sort of thick watercolor paper.
The craft of Wiinblad is often colorful, lush and full of humor. He was inspired by the sumptuous oriental style far from the Nordic minimalist line.
The views on his works are to this day very divided, but interest in his finer things are unrelenting - especially abroad (particularly the U.S., Japan, Germany and Norway). Bjørn Wiinblad's contemporaries were not exactly inclined to acknowledge his way to work, so his position as an artist has been a bit special.
Globally, Bjørn Wiinblad is one of the very best selling Danish artists. He is represented at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London and the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
