More info

The poster was made to promote and defend a communist revolution in Afghanistan. In 1978 the Afghan Communist Party made a coup and took power in the country and ultimately ended the monarchy. After the coup the country became quite unstable with many different factions on both sides. One major faction was The Soviet Union who invaded (or intervened) the country to stabilize Afghanistan. In the western world the act was seen as an invasion. The Soviets withdrew in 1989 leaving Afghanistan to rival warlords.

The poster was published by the Cuban political movement shortened "OSPAAAL" (Organization of Solidarity with the People of Asia, Africa and Latin America). The movement was born in 1965 with the purpose to promote ideas such as socialism, human rights and communism but also to speak against globalisation, imperialism and liberalism. Many of the approx. 326 OSPAAAL posters made stands as iconic and historical Cold War propaganda poster and many of the posters are highly valued by both collectors and entusiasts all over the world.
