"Is it you who imitate me or I who imitate you?" - so said Charles Chaplin to his friend Charlie Rivel.
Actually Charlie took his name from his friend Chaplin but his real name was Josep Andreu (1896-1983). Charlie Rivel is probably one of the most famous clowns to this date and was his personal brand was a red blouse that had become too big after being washed in too cold water!
Charlie Rivel formed the group "Los Rivels" with his brothers Polo Rivel and René Rivel when he was only three years old - and this poster is an advertisement for their show. Notice they have squared red noses - the trademark of the famous trio.
The poster was made by legendary Erik Stockmarr - an artist with a capital A, and he drew only a few posters, but was very recognized on the mountain of artists in mid century. Stockmarr's original posters are often sold as “circus poster classics” at various auctions. This very poster is no exception though could be in better condition which is considered in the price (please see details below).
This original poster is a great addition to every room that needs a happy and lively decor but a certain must-have for collectors of vintage circus posters or anyone associated with the circus.
