Since 1994 Tivoli Gardens has staged a Christmas market filled with delicious food stalls and small open-air shops with different local handcrafts. This poster is an advertisement for the Christmas Market in 1999 and was made by the legendary Danish artist, Bjørn Wiinblad. With the lights in abundance, Christmas trees and quite crowded setting, Wiinblad makes it clear that it is Christmastime. What is a little unusual about this work is that Wiinblad left the faces of the people blank - something which is quite uncommon for him as one of his favourite motifs is faces.
The poster displays three of Tivoli's most famous buildings; the huge peacock whose wings creates the stage curtain at old the Pantomime Theatre, The Indian Palace which now hosts one of the best restaurants in Copenhagen and Japanese Tower which was built in 1901 and has approx. 2,800 colored domes on the tower and its annexes. The tower is also referred to as "The Chinese Tower" for some reason I cannot explain.
Tivoli is one of the world's most famous amusement parks. The park is the second oldest amusement park in the world and is based in Copenhagen, Denmark and is by far the most visited spot in Scandinavia.
